Feedback on the Bromley Local Offer website
and the actions taken

August 2016
start

This webpage pulls together the feedback, comments & ideas received from parents & carers, and professionals, on the Bromley Local Offer website.

The latest version of the Bromley Local Offer website (part of the Bromley MyLife website) was launched in April 2016. It was developed, designed & built using the lessons learnt and feedback from parents & carers on the previous versions that have existed since September 2013.

It was designed around ‘nine core needs’ of children & young people with disabilities & learning needs & their families.

Between April and July 2016 the Bromley MyLife website team undertook a project to meet face-to-face with a number of parents & carers of children & young people with disabilities & learning needs to seek their direct feedback & comments on the new site. The team also met with other professionals for their input too.

This document collates the feedback, comments & ideas received, and the actions that the Bromley MyLife website team have taken, or have not taken.

What you told us

This section looks at your general feedback that you gave us which didn't fit within a single section

Can you add useful resources to the site, such as visual timetables, parenting courses, etc.?

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

Can you add a list of key words & terminology or a Jargon Buster?

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

The IASS contact box on each page should be permanently available rather than needing to ‘click to reveal’

We have had mixed views on this – some people would like to see the information and some only want to see it when they choose to. We will leave it as it is and continue to seek feedback & views.

The front page and other pages where it just talks about children with SEND, it used to have ‘and young people’ which seems to have disappeared – could this be changed at all?

Our user experience showed that it wasn’t relevant to parents when they were reading through the website & that it just made it harder & longer to read.

Can you add a ‘print this page’ function?

We like this idea. We have added the button below to our pages -

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our General comments

If you don't, just move on

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Advice about my child's development section

We don’t understand where behavioural concerns would fit in?

We agree that this is not clear enough. We will look at how we can improve this later in the year.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our Advice about my child's development section

If you don't, just move on

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Childcare section

There should be a link about the assessment processes on the childcare pages

We agree – we have added a new link onto the Childcare page, see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/childcarelo.

Can you add a link to the leisure section on the childcare page?

We are not sure that this is needed. A link to the Leisure page is already available on the Childcare page via the menu.

Can the childcare page include details of the 30 hour a week entitlement?

The new 30 hours free childcare starts in September 2017. We will update our information nearer the time.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our Childcare section

When I searched the site for ‘Statements’ information about EHC Plans did not come up

We have amended our keywords in the background of the website to resolve this.

Stage 1 of the SEN Assessment process should include references to reporting concerns & talking to Health Visitors

We agree. We have added this into the text.

There needs to be better linkages between the SEN Assessment information and the Social Care Assessment information

We agree. We will look at how we can improve this later in the year.

The SEN Assessment process needs to be clearer around the difference between stages 1 and 2

We agree. We have changed some of our wording to make this clearer.

The role of the (SIPS) should be clearer in the assessment process

We agree. We have changed our wording to make this clearer in the SEN Assessment process pages. We have also published a new page for ‘Early years targeted and specialist services’ – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/earlyyearsspecialist.

The list of special schools, Pupil Referral Units and alternative provision academies should be separated into separate sections by type, age & need

We agree – the original list was muddled. To simplify we have separated these into three lists –

1.    Special schools – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/directory/providerlistalt.aspx?id=26383

2.    Pupil Referral Units – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/directory/providerlistalt.aspx?id=26384

3.    Alternative provision academies – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/directory/providerlistalt.aspx?id=26385

We have not separated into separate sections by type, age & need due to the small numbers of schools involved.

The list of Pupil Referral Units and alternative provision academies in the borough was not clear, obvious & easy to find

We agree – we have made this clearer on the Choosing a Primary School (see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/primaryschoollo) & Choosing a Secondary School (see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/secondaryschoollo) pages.

The list of schools with specialist units should be separated into separate sections by type, age & need

We agree – the original list was muddled. To simplify we have separated these into two lists –

1.    Primary age – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/directory/providerlistalt.aspx?id=26391

2.    Secondary age – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/directory/providerlistalt.aspx?id=26393

We have not separated into separate sections by type, age & need due to the small numbers of schools involved.

The introductory text for each schools with specialist units, special schools, Pupil Referral Units, and alternative provision academies should be clearer about who they are for

We agree. The text wasn’t clear enough, it was muddled, and each entry had a different format for the introductory text. To make it easier for users to clearly see the school type, the age range, and the needs that the schools meet, we have rewritten the introductory text for all –

- schools with specialist units
- special schools
- Pupil Referral Units
- alternative provision

There is no information about the support available for children transitioning from primary school, such as CASPA

We agree that this is an area that could be strengthened. We will work with the providers across the borough to improve this information.

The ‘Education & learning’ page should have clearer contact information & a description for the IASS & Independent Support Programme

We agree – it is there, but it is not clear enough.

We have added more details about the IASS & ISP on this page – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/educationlo.

Can you rename the ‘Education & learning’ section to reflect the training & employment options for young people aged over 16

We agree that ‘education’ and ‘learning’ are very similar in their meaning and do not clearly reflect the options for young people aged 16 plus.

We have renamed this section to ‘Education, training & employment’ – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/educationlo.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our Education, training & employment section

If you don't, just move on

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Health support & conditions section

There needs to be clearer information about Personal Health Budgets

We agree – we have added a clearer information on the Health support & conditions page – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/healthlo.

Can the site include links to help parents find private therapists, such as SALT or OT’s?

Yes – we think this is a really great idea. We have added the following information –

1.    Speech & language delay – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/saltlo
- Find a Speech and Language Therapist via the Association of Speech and Language Therapists website
- Other support – links to TalkingPoint, The Communication Trust, ICAN & Bromley Clinical Commissioning Group
- Videos from The Communication Trust which provide advice to parents

2.    Physical difficulties & sensory needs – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/physicaldifficultieslo
- Find an Occupational Therapist via the College of Occupational Therapists website

Is it possible to have more info under hearing and visual to highlight those opticians/ophthalmologists with some interest/background in SEND?

I found an optician on SeeAbility so maybe there could be a link?

Yes – we think this is a really great idea. We have added the following information about SeeAbility to the Hearing & visual impairments page – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/sensoryimpairmentslo.

Can you provide more information about equipment options – both NHS funded and personally funded?

We have added advice about how parents can –

a) identify, find & buy their own equipment via AskSara for Children

b) find funding options to purchase them

See our Physical difficulties & sensory needs page https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/physicaldifficultieslo.

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Housing help & adaptations section

Can you include details about social housing options?

We think this would be a good idea. We will look at how we can include this later in the year as we enhance this section.

Can you make the wording clearer about Disabled Facilities Grants?

We have used the wording from Bromley Council’s website for this. We will look at how we can improve this later in the year as we enhance this section.

The current information does not make it clear about the support provided for children with learning disabilities, autism, etc. – such as locks

We agree. We will look at how we can improve this later in the year as we enhance this section.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our Housing help & adaptations section

If you don't, just move on

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Leisure activities & things to do section

Can you rename the ‘Leisure activities & parks’ section, we don’t feel the word ‘parks’ fits in

We agree that the word ‘parks’ doesn’t necessarily fit.

We have renamed the section to “Leisure activities & things to do” – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/leisurelo.

Can you add details of things to do in other local authority areas?

Yes – this was something that we previously had.

We have added a useful links box with links to the local offer websites for our neighbouring authorities onto the “Leisure activities & things to do” page – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/leisurelo.

Can you include details of specific events, such as special theatre showings, cinema screenings, etc.?

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

Can you add details about the SEA cinema card?

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

We found the ‘short breaks’ title confusing

We agree – we have renamed this title to “Short Breaks from Children’s Social Care – have a break from caring”.

Can you add photos of the specialist play equipment to go with the descriptions to make this clearer?

We like this idea. The current description is confusing. We have added an illustrative image to the different types of inclusive equipment – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/accessibleplaygroundslo.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our Leisure activities & things to do section

If you don't, just move on

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Money, benefits & grants section

Can you add details of the REACT charity to the grants & benefits section?

We do not provide information about specific grant making charities. Instead we signpost to other websites that provide a database or register of charitable & grant making organisations. See https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/grantslo.

We didn’t understand that the ‘Money help & advice’ section included benefit advice

We agree that this is not as clear as it could be. We have renamed the section to ‘Money, benefits & grants’ – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/moneyadvicelo.

Following feedback we have also renamed the ‘Grants and gifts’ to ‘Charitable grants and gifts’ – see https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/grantslo.

Can you make it clearer that being awarded higher rate mobility for Disability Living Allowance or the Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment means that you can join the Mobility Scheme to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair?

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

Can you add a comment that if you ask for a DLA postal pack, the DWP will date stamp the form and will ‘back pay’ to this date

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

Can you make it clear that you do not need a diagnosis to apply for DLA and PIP?

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

There is no mention of the support that is available to help you fill in benefit forms, such as from Bromley Mencap

We like this idea. We will work with Bromley Mencap to make sure that details of this service are clearly available.

Please let us know if you have any other feedback about our Money, benefits & grants section

If you don't, just move on

This section looks at the feedback that you gave us on our Parenting & family support section

There needs to be clearer information about Personal Budgets for Social Care

We agree. We have reworded the information about Personal Budgets for Social Care and have added this onto the ‘Short Breaks from Children’s Social Care’ instead of having the information separately. See https://bromley.mylifeportal.co.uk/shortbreakslo.

The Children’s Disability Register needs to be more obvious – and the description & purpose needs to be made clearer

We like this idea. We will look at how we can do this later in the year.

Can you create an online forum for parents to share their experiences & seek informal peer support?

We like the idea of parents and carers supporting each other; however, this is not something that we are in a position to offer.

Instead, we will look at how we can encourage parents and carers to use the online forum on the Bromley Parent Voice website – see www.bromleyparentvoice.org.uk/forum.

Services & organisations

In addition to this the above we told about a number of other services & organisations that exist in the borough. Some come from parents during our face-to-face discussions.

A number of other ‘universal’ and ‘targeted’ services were also provided via a project stream within the Social Care Innovation Fund Project led by Bromley Parent Voice.

All of these services & organisations will be added into the directory section of the Bromley MyLife website before the end of September 2016.

As part of the redesigned Bromley Local Offer website launched in April 2016, a new online form was created for providers to directly tell the Bromley MyLife website team about their services. This has been used by 13 services & organisations.

Your final thoughts. Now you've read through our 'You said, we did' list we hope that you believe that we do listen to, & act on, your feedback.
